How I pimped my snare
A while ago, a friend of mine gave me a nice snaredrum. It had a 14x6"
maple Keller shell in natural finish, white powder-coated die cast
hoops and brass lugs.
This is how the snare looked like:
nice snaredrum, but a bit dull, isn't it?
Because I didn' really like the white hoops - natural wood combo, I
decided to change the looks of the shell.
As with my Pearl W-series kit, I used plastic
self-adhesive decoration foil for this.
In the shop, I came across this 3D snakeskin foil:
It's a nice and thick foil, and there was just enough left for 1
snaredrum. My lucky day!
How I pimped my snare - Step by step
Step 1: Removal of heads, hoops and other hardware:
Step 2: Applying the foil.
Before you start, make sure that the shell is dust- and grease free.
Carefully rub the foil onto the shell using a soft cloth. This will
prevent air bubbles.
For this foil, this was easy because of its thickness. For a nice look,
let the seams of the foil overlap a few milimeters
Step 3: Removal of the edges.
I used a sharp hobby knife for this. Be careful not to damage the
bearing edge!
Step 4: Marking the shell holes.
It usually suffices to use a screw driver with a square head. Use the
hobby knife for
larger holes.
Step 5a: Reassembly of the hardware:
Step 5b: And also the heads and snares:
The end result:
the Mischa
Machine Snakeskin Custom snare :)
Total effort: 1 hour. Costs: 4 Euro. :)
